MLP Student Books Come Alive!

I am so excited to share that on May 20, 2023, The MLP student authors and illustrators had the opportunity to share their books with the AV community.  Each book inspired an interactive station!

I want to thank all volunteers and the organizers for making this event possible.

Participants engaged in a task at each station to earn a “badge”.  If they completed all eight stations, then they received an additional prize.

Participants explored one of two caves to identify a rare plant, insect, and amphibian.  This station was inspired by “Sambi Nayar and the Cave Dwellers”, by J’Shawn Dillard with supporting illustrations by Lu Hubbell.

Participants drew pictures or wrote a note to show why friendships are important.  This station was inspired by “An Amazing Day at Wishland” by Jesus Ovando Bazarra and illustrated by Cindy Alvarez.  The story highlights the importance of collaborating with friends to plan a visit to an amusement park.

The racing station was inspired by “Luna’s Creation” by Audrey Ocampo with supporting illustrations by Lu Hubbell.  This story highlights ingenuity, creativity, and problem solving as Luna and her mother design and build their own toy car.  In this station, participants built and decorated their own toy car, then raced them down ramps.

The wilderness education badge was inspired by the story “How Tall is Lulu?” by Kayla Maples and illustrated by Lu Hubbell.  This story shows Lulu and Susie and their friend Jess attempting to calculate Lulu’s height in various ways.  In this station, participants were able to compare their own height and footprint to that of various animals.

The Slime station was very popular!  This station was inspired by the story “Tasha’s Adventures in Cooking, Cups are Cups”, by Aunt T and Sarah Reed and illustrated by Abi Burk.  Participants were challenged to use exact measurements to follow a recipe to create either sticky or fluffy slime.

Participants were thrilled to catch fish during the event.  I was so pleased to see so many participants of all ages catch, weigh, and measure their fish to compare to the leader board and earn their fishing badge!  This station was inspired by the story “The Monsters of Math Plan a Fishing Derby” by Aunt T and Ryan Reed and illustrated by Lu Hubbell.

Participants were asked to vote for their favorite snacks to help plan a party at the Citizenship station.  Then students explained why voting for snacks helps to understand the importance of voting within our democracy.  This station was inspired by “The Monsters of Math Plan a Party” by Aunt T and Ryan Reed and illustrated by Lu Hubbell.

I look forward to collaborating with more students in the future to continue to publish student authored and illustrated books that highlight the importance of math and science in everyday life!

I want to thank Antelope Valley Union High School District for this opportunity to highlight these young authors and illustrators.
